Andre Derain is one of the so-called cofounders of fauvism. He worked along side matisse in art school after some supposed convincing of his parents to allow him to leave engineering school. He and Matisse were dubbed “les Fauves” at the Salon d’Automne, an art show of the mediterranean village of Collioure. Les Fauves means “the wild beasts” and references there extravagant and unnatural use of color within their work. My own work is similar in this study of color. Though less refined as a conceptual idea, I try to teach myself through painting with a multitude of color, what colors mix, what goes well together and how hot and cold colors affect each other in terms of dimensionality and physical presence.
